Jesus -- the Joy in our Journey

Time to Apply for CLS Tuition Assistance
For School Year 2012-2013

It is time to apply for lower tuition available to Jehovah Lutheran Church members if you plan to send your child or children to Central Lutheran School for the school year 2012-2013. CLS offers lower tuition to active members at Jehovah Lutheran and at other participating churches. The churches make up the balance by paying an assessment to the school.

Application forms and related documents are available in the church office. Completed applications are due in the church office by Feb. 28. More information is available by phoning the office at 651-644-1421 or e-mailing jlc_dawn@msn.com.

Adult Bible Study
ADVENT – TO – LENT: Jesus and the Gospels
EACH SUNDAY @ 9:30 a.m. in the Lounge

All are welcome for Coffee, Shared Prayer & In-Depth Study!

Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson, professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, presents his lectures with passion, scholarly nuance and a delightful sense of humor. He has twice received the “On Eagle’s Wings Excellence in Teaching” award at Emory University.

After LTJ’s lectures on DVD various class members will facilitate discussion of the stimulating materials as we seek to learn more about the heart of the Gospel story, Jesus. Because these gospel narratives were born of an oral tradition, LTJ often reads aloud to best convey their full richness and original meanings.

A special feature at the end of this 13-week study will be dramatist and pastor Roger Ezell’s telling of the Jesus Story According to Mark via video.

Topics in 2012 set the stage about the importance of Gospels and then study the Gospel of Mark.

Jan   8       The Context – Jesus in the Memory of the Church
Jan 15       Earliest Stages – Paul and the Oral Tradition
Jan 22       The Synoptic Problem and Its Solutions
Jan 29       Gospel of Mark – Apocalyptic and Irony
Feb   5       Gospel of Mark – Good News in Mystery
Feb 12       Gospel of Mark – Teacher and Disciples
Feb 19       Gospel of Mark – Passion and Death
Feb 26       Roger Ezell tells the Jesus Story According to Mark on video

Come and sing!

Our mixed-voice choir for singers from seventh grade to adult rehearses from 7-8 p.m. Wednesdays and sings up to four Sundays per month, primarily at the 10:45 a.m. service.

We sing, have fun during rehearsal, support each other in tough times, pray together and throw great parties.

If you have a busy schedule, it's OK to come when you can — or you could just join us for the great music of Christmas and Easter.

For more information, contact Elizabeth Wegner at 651-353-4272 or e-mail blabweg@hotmail.com.

Women’s Bible Study Continues through Feb. 1
on Alternate Wednesdays

A women’s Bible study continues from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on alternate Wednesdays through Feb. 1. The Bible study is based on author Beth Moore’s book Breaking Free.

The Bible study focuses on the Old Testament book of Isaiah to help participants discover the transforming power of Christian freedom.

Remaining dates are Dec. 14, Jan. 4, Jan. 18 and Feb. 1 — no class Dec. 28.  More information is available from the church office at 651-644-1421 or Bridget at bridgetkruchowski@comcast.net.

All are welcome. Jehovah Lutheran is in St. Paul at Thomas and Snelling.

SANCTUARY GORGEOUS FOR MEKANE YESUS WEDDING

More than 350 filled the Jehovah Lutheran sanctuary July 9 for the wedding of Andenet Zelalem and Samuel Francis, the son of Pastor Francis Stephanos of Mekane Yesus. Photo by Brian Kruchowski

The bride works as a nurse. The groom is music director at Mekane Yesus and at a Nigerian congregation in north Minneapolis and is studying IT. Pastor Stephanos performed the ceremony in the Jehovah Lutheran sanctuary — decorated in white drapery and rose petals for the occasion by families and friends of the bride and groom.
Mekane Yesus, our sister Ethiopian congregation, shares our space.

Jehovah Lutheran’s beautiful sanctuary looked especially gorgeous
after being dressed up for a big Ethiopian wedding July 9.
